Domain Names

Your domain name is the website address used to identify the location of your website on a hosting server. Your domain name is linked (pointed) to an Internet Protocol (IP) address so that when one of your customers types this web address into their browser your website appears. This is also the method in which search engines such as Google reference your website so it is important that you carefully select the most appropriate domain name(s) for your business.

KDG are experts at analysing your business and finding the most suitable domain names which are available for registration. Your domain name is one of the most over-looked parts of a websites construction. It is important for your business to secure its Online Intellectual Property and protect itself against competitors stealing these domain names for malicious use. Although stealing .com.au domains is not very common; stealing .com’s is far more prevalent as these domains may be purchased by anyone around the world – you don’t even need to have a registered business to purchase a .com domain!

Beware of Cyber-squatters
The worse case examples of what happens when people purchase .com variations of other domains is known as ‘cyber-squatting’. This common practice usually involves a person registering the .com domain name and pointing this domain to an illicit adult website. When one of your prospects types in your .com.au domain in their browser but forgets to add the ‘.au’ on the end, the prospect gets taken to the adult site. This can be very damaging to a companies or persons reputation.

You don’t have to look hard to find examples of cyber-squatting. Not too long ago, Casey Donovan – the winner of Australian Idol, had her website hosted at www.caseydonovan.com.au. What the developers of her website didn’t check was the fact that Casey Donovan was a gay porn star who had the website www.caseydonovan.com*. This was publicised heavily in the media after Casey won Australian Idol. Another example is the United States Government website, www.whitehouse.gov. Many people still to this day type in www.whitehouse.com – only to find out that it was the domain name of a porno website!*

* Note: These domains are no longer active porn sites. Either the websites have been pulled down or they have had to fight an expensive court battle to receive an injunction against the domain holder. Regardless of what actually happened, both domains are for sale to the highest bidder!

Keyword domains improve your Google ranking
KDG have also recommended some keyword domain names that relate to your business. Registering these domains and pointing them to your website will help improve your sites ranking on search engines such as Google. Since keywords are a primary reference point for search engines, having domain names that contain your keywords will not only improve your ranking, they will also broaden your net for capturing prospects that type in keywords directly into their browser followed by a .com or .com.au. You can also point these keyword domains directly to the appropriate section of your website.

Domain Registration/Renewal (.com.au)
The .au domain (.com.au, .net.au, .org.au etc.) represents businesses and companies operating within Australia. The following “Rules and Restrictions” apply to these domain names.
  • The domain must be directly derived from your registered Australian Company Number (ACN) and/or Registered Business Name (RBN) and/or registered trading name (Australian Business Number (ABN)). This may be an exact match, an acronym or other variable (eg. product name, brand name etc.).
  • The domain must be at least 2 and no more than 63 characters in length.
  • The domain can be made up of letters and numbers and can be separated by hyphens, not spaces or underscores.

Domain Registration/Renewal (.com)
International Top Level Domains (TLD’s) such as .com, .net and .org can be used globally and are usually used by individuals, businesses or organisations that wish to communicate to a global community. Rules and regulations do not apply to these domains, however they do operate on a first come, first served basis.

Other Top Level Domains
Other Top Level Domains (TLD’s) such as .biz and .info can be registered if a suitable international (.com) domain cannot be secured. Some .biz and .info domains may require proof of trademark or proof of trading as the business entity name you are registering.
