CELAS

Location: Victoria

Centro Espaņol Latinoamericano de Asistencia Social (CELAS)

CELAS is the Centro Espaņol Latinoamericano de Asistencia Social. It is located at 209 Nicholson St Foostcray, conveniently close to the train station.

Provided below are the email addresses of the relevant programme coordinators, however we recommend that you go to CELAS to express your interest face to face.

The volunteer opportunities CELAS offers are as follows:

Volunteering through the Friendly Visiting Programme.
This involves visiting an elderly Spanish-speaking person once a week. CELAS requires that students make a six month commitment to this programme. This is because it takes some time for the elderly to become accustomed to someone coming into their home, and it is not fair to be inconsistent.
Email Celina Rojas at c.rojas@celas.org.au.

Volunteering at the Adult Day Care Centre.
THe ADCC is a planned activity group funded through the Department of Human services and designed to keep the elderly active, both physically and mentally. It provides a forum for those most isolated to interact with people their age, and also gives their carers a rest once a week.
Email Celina Rojas at c.rojas@celas.org.au.

Volunteering for reception and administration work.
Students who volunteer for this need to have a very advanced level of Spanish, as reception is the first contact clients have with CELAS. Some clients may be quite distressed when calling, and hence students must be able to understand the clients' concerns.

Volunteering for Carer's Week.
This week of activities is usually held in October. Volunteers are always required.
Email Celina at c.rojas@celas.org.au.

Volunteering with the Computer Classes Programme.
This involves teaching Spanish-speakers, usually middle-aged to elderly, basic computer classes. These classes should cover turning the computer on, searching the internet, setting up an email address, sending emails, and revising the email account.

Volunteering for the English Programme.
This is restricted to helping facilitate conversation groups or other activities within the English class, as directed by the English teacher.
Email Maria Inez at miz@netspace.net.au.

Researching funding sources and writing submissions to them.
This is undertaken by volunteers as directed by CELAS programme coordinators and Alex.

Volunteering for the Market Within a Market.
This is an annual Spanish and Latin-American event held at the Queen Victoria Market in May. Volunteers help with preparation and setting up of this event, and lend a hand on the day.
Email Veronica at v.navarro@celas.org.au.
